2012 Quilter of the Year

Nancy Everling, Cal-co Quilter’s Quilt Quilter of the Year

Cal-co Quilter’s Guild, 2012 Quilter of the Year, Nancy Everling, says she has never met a quilter she didn’t like. “Quilters are so friendly and always willing to share and help another quilter.” She attributes her sewing skills and involvement in quilting with the many friendships she has acquired in the guild since her retirement as an RN in 2001. Nancy first learned of the Cal-co Quilter’s Guild at the guild’s quilt show in Marshall when a friend (Quilter of the Year 2011, Rita Frost) from many years ago invited her to a meeting. At that first meeting Nancy volunteered to be in charge of Hospitality. And she has been volunteering and working ever since. She has served on the board as Member-at-large as well as Hospitality and served on the Nominating Committee. For the last 7 years she has been chairperson of Intake of Quilts at the annual quilt show and volunteers in the Cal-co Café.

Nancy has attended quilt camp, bus trips and participates in Quilts for Kids, and Hospice Quilts in addition to being a member of 3 different quilting circles, Ladies of the Lake, Thursday Threaders, and Quilting Divas.

In quilting, Nancy’s love right now is machine appliqué using fusible webbing and blanket stitching. Her favorite part of any project is fabric selection which can be more time consuming than doing the project. Nancy also enjoys doing redwork and other embroidery stitching as well as piecing quilts.

Christmas is Nancy’s favorite time of year and much of her display at the quilt show will be Christmas quilts. One of her very first quilts will also be at the show. It was a class in making Moon Glow by designer, Jinny Beyer, in which she won her first ribbon. Nancy’s display of her work promises to be one not to miss.

She will be showcasing her many Christmas quilts which is her favorite time of year and other quilts as well. Her passion is machine applique but also enjoys embroidery and pieced quilts. UFO Challenge

2012 UFO CHALLENGE

Throughout the 2012 year, all Cal-Co Quilt Guild members are invited to take part in a UFO Challenge. The UFO’s
need to be projects that were started BEFORE 2011. If you complete the project by the December 2012 guild
meeting, your name will be entered into a drawing for a cash gift of $25. You can enter as many UFO’s as you like,
but you can only win one cash prize. The $25 cash gifts will be awarded to six guild members. You are encouraged
to bring your unfinished work as well as your completed quilt to one of the meetings for “Show and Tell”. The
finished project needs to be completely done (quilted, bound, etc.) to be entered in the drawing.

Quilts for Kids

We received many warm, colorful and comfy quilts at the May “quilt gathering”. In fact, 52 completed quilts and 7 quilt tops were brought to the meeting. The Quilts for Kids Committee would like to thank everyone for their generosity. These wonderful quilts will put a smile on the faces of many children in our community.

In June, we will be delivering approximately 100 quilts to Inasmuch House and Safe Place. Michelle, of Safe Place, has indicated that their need for quilts will be minimally increased to include the expansion of some of their upcoming programs, such as parenting classes and to assist mothers and children who are now residing in an off-premises facility. We are able to increase our quilt donations to Safe Place because of your willingness to give of your time and talent. Thank you so much!

Also, thank you to the gals who came to our recent “cutting” day. We got most of our scraps cut into squares and strips. Within the next month or two, we will sort and bag the squares/strips and bring them to guild in hopes that many of you will turn them into patchwork quilts for our kids.

We thank all guild members for their continued support of our “Quilts for Kids” project. Have a good summer.
